What's the song of your heart?

I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.

What keeps you awake at night? What's disturbing your peace?
As I write this post, I'm mindful of those among us who frustratingly deal with chronic insomnia for unknown reasons. And those of us who are feeling as though they're fighting a losing battle with depression. Maybe you're on the verge of giving up hope. You've prayed for deliverance and healing but nothing has changed your situation. Is there any help left for me? You wonder. How am I going to get through the night?
Today, I'd like us to take a few minutes and reread those verses above. Let them sink deep into your soul and minister to your spirit.
When David wrote these words, he was in the wilderness hiding from King Saul. He'd done nothing wrong to deserve being hunted down like a wild animal. Finding food and water was difficult in that arid place. To top it all off, his family abandoned him because they were afraid of getting killed themselves.
We see in this Psalm that David struggled with anxiety, depression and insomnia. However, what we see him doing all through the Psalms is that no matter what emotions he felt, be they good or bad, he'd bring them before the Lord. When he couldn't sleep, he meditated on who God was to him. And from that place of brokenness, God gave him songs of joy to sing over his circumstances.
Similarly, God wants to give you songs to sing over your situation. There's something interesting about music and songs. Since most songs are birthed from the heart, they transcend language barriers. David meditated on God's protection and goodness to the extent where his heart produced songs. Although not all of us might be musically inclined or great singers, I believe that there are songs of victory that the Lord desires to drop into your heart. So, the next time you find yourself tossing and turning on your bed, would you ask Him for a song to sing to Him? He will help you to sing through your night of despair and lead you into victory.
