Be an Aaron and Hur

As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset.

I've been turning this verse around in my mind for the last couple of days and felt it appropriate to share with you some lessons that the Lord has placed on my heart.
The context is that God's people, the children of Israel were in the desert on their way to the promised land, when without warning, the Amalekites came out to attack them. We must always be prepared for when our Enemy strikes. Moses was by this stage too old to fight physically, but he held the staff of God (representing the authority of God) up on a high place while the Israelites fought against the Amalekites under Joshua's leadership. Notice that as long as Moses held the staff up, the Israelites made gains, but when his hands were down, it gave their enemies the advantage.
It is the same with us. We are fighting a war with spiritual enemies. We're fighting not against flesh and blood. This is a battle that cannot be won on your own. You need people like Aaron and Hur to lift your hands up when you're tired. We know from Scripture that Aaron was high priest. Similarly, we are priests of God and ambassadors of Christ. Not much is known about Hur, except that he was probably pretty old 80+ years old by this time. He was too old to fight physically but he came alongside Moses to lift up his hands to build him up spiritually.
So today, may I encourage you to be both an Aaron and Hur. Who among your circle needs to be built up? Who can you lift up to the Lord in prayer? How about your pastors, your elders, your parents and your brothers and sisters in Christ?
